Christmas Decorating Tips on Using Mistletoe

Mistletoe is such a traditional part of Christmas decorating. It is a romantic and pretty way to decorate. You will have endless reasons to kiss your loved one if you follow this guide on decorating with mistletoe.

Begin with the doors. A doorway is a traditional position for holiday mistletoe. Find a few strategically positioned doorways in your home to hang it from. There are different ways to hang it such as a small finishing nail or a removable hook that is attached with double-sided tape. 3M makes a range that will not do any damage to the wood. Make sure that the mistletoe hangs at a good height for most people.

Christmas centerpieces. Mistletoe can be hung in other places besides the doorways. You can place it around the house in other ways. Think about using either real or silk mistletoe, have it in a lovely bowl in the center of the dinner table. Team it up with some sparkly holiday balls - green balls are ideal.

Put mistletoe in your wreaths. You can make an attractive door hanger by adding real mistletoe to a wreath made from real spruce branches. Use cotton or clear fishing line to tie the mistletoe tightly onto your holiday wreaths. What a lovely welcome your guests will receive as they enter your home.

Mistletoe can also be used in a garland. An additional place to decorate with mistletoe is in a garland. Garlands look wonderful on pillars, your stair railings and the front of your fire mantle - why not add a few branches of mistletoe. Try to use a hidden way to attach the mistletoe (like fishing line). Tie it securely.

Make a holiday bouquet. Create a fresh arrangement of holiday-inspired plants and flowers and place them in a lovely vase, then add some mistletoe to the vase. It doesn’t necessarily have to be real to be placed with other real decorations - just as long as it fits in with the whole look.

It is easy and fun to add mistletoe to your holiday decorating. There will be no need to miss out on a kiss beneath the mistletoe these holidays!

The Cash-Strapped Parent’s Guide to Christmas - How to Have a …

If you walked into Wal-Mart or other retail store this weekend you were probably met with Christmas displays and trees. Talk a walk down the aisles and you’ll hear the Christmas music playing softly in the background. Some may be little agitated that Thanksgiving has been completely ignored or at best got one day of attention (probably on the day nobody really went shopping).

But you get over the agitation quickly when you stop and think about the thousands of single moms and parents out there who feel burdened by the Christmas holidays. Millions of people have faced this dread in years past and millions more will face it this year because of the economic crisis.

If you are one of these single moms or parents you wonder where you’ll get the money to buy gifts for your kids. You may even make the decision to only purchase one gift or no more than three (in the spirit of Christ’s birth). As much as you want to give your precious little ones everything they wanted you just can’t. You don’t have the money because you need to pay the rent or car note. You need to make sure there was food in the house for the days after Christmas.

There are so many people this year who need a helping hand this year. So with a little research I’ve come up with a pretty long list of resources. These are organizations that help needy families during the Christmas holidays. They give toys and sometimes clothes to families that need a helping hand during this time of year.

Most of the organizations have local chapters so you will have to contact the one nearest you for more information. Please don’t be shy about calling. They are there to help and often are looking for people to help. The more localized the better for you. Also remember to get a head start on applying for help. Some deadlines have already passed but try anyway. Your persistence will pay off.

Toys for Tots - This organization has many local chapters. Their deadline in some places was in October but they are still taking applications. If they have toys left you will be contacted.

Angel Tree - This program is for kids who have parents in prison.

Salvation Army - Contact your local chapter for information about their program. They don’t collect money in those little red pails for nothing. You just may be one of the families they help this year.

These three organizations are willing and able to help any family give the gift of Christmas to their children.

Have Yourself A Merry (And Safe!) Little Christmas

Have Yourself A Merry (And Safe!) Little ChristmasBy Jeremy White

If you’ve ever had a real tree in your home for the holidays, you know there’s nothing quite like it. Sure, artificial Christmas trees are great and are no-brainers for convenience and safety, but a real tree brings to life age-old Yuletide traditions.

Each year, around 30 million homes opt for live trees, according to the National Christmas Tree Association (NCTA). But, as referenced, live trees do carry more of a safety issue than the artificial variety. Namely, a poorly maintained live tree quickly becomes a fire hazard within the home. Thankfully, there are steps you can take to aid your quest in making your live tree as safe as possible.

It begins with the selection process. Your goal is to purchase the freshest tree possible. Obviously, unless you cut it yourself or watch a harvester cut it, you won’t know how fresh the tree is unless you ask. When purchasing a pre-cut tree from a vendor, ask the sales associate when the tree was cut and where it came from. If you live in New York, for example, and the tree came from Oregon - then you know it has been cut for at least a couple of days, most likely.

A cut tree quickly loses moisture. So examine the needles or leaves closely. Look for a tree with green needles and very few brown needles. Many trees are sprayed to retain their green color longer, so go one step further by feeling the needles themselves. They should be moist and pliable. If they break when you bend them with your fingers they are too dry.

If you must store your tree for several hours or a day before putting it in your home, do not store it in direct sunlight. A better option would be in a garage where it will be out of both light and the wind, both of which will dry it out more quickly.

Before you erect your Christmas tree, make a fresh cut on its trunk, about one-half inch above the vendor’s cut. This will allow your tree to “drink” from its base more readily. Your water stand should hold one gallon of water and will need to be replenished frequently. Place your tree in its base immediately after your secondary cut, and make sure the base has hot water in it when you first erect your Christmas tree. The hot water will help prevent the freshly cut base from sealing itself off, thereby allowing it to absorb more water.

Where you place your tree within your home is paramount. It needs to be away from heat sources. Do not put your live Christmas tree near a fireplace, radiator, furnace, heating vent, etc.

As previously mentioned, you want a Christmas tree stand that will hold at least one gallon of water. A dry tree is an invitation to disaster, so check the water level daily and make sure to always keep it full. Do not make the mistake of waiting until it is empty or low to re-fill it.

Another common mistake homeowners make with live trees is buying and erecting them too early. Three to four weeks is about the limit for a live tree, even one that is extremely fresh at purchase and well watered and maintained inside the home. Keep a close eye on the amount of water the tree takes in each day. When your tree no longer consumes the water, it’s time to take it down.

Lastly, when decorating the tree, use miniature light bulbs instead of large bulbs, because they’ll put off less heat. And, never - NEVER - place Christmas candles or any other source with an open flame in, around or near your Christmas tree.
