January Sales - Find The Bargains

January Sales - Find The Bargains by Chloe Ramsbottom

Every New Year always starts with a January Sale and gives us all a chance to discover those much wanted bargains that we have been waiting for. From a personal view points if I need any expensive products I always wait till after the Christmas phase has finished and get them in January, it’s a brilliant way of saving money that can be put towards other essential things such as paying bills, paying off loans, keeping petrol and tax on the car and helping mortgage repayments. I’ve always considered what is the point in paying say £1,000 on a piece of furniture when you can get that exact same item so much cheaper in the January sales? It seems only right to wait and pay a substantial amount less.

With the credit crunch not getting any better a lot of us will be struggling with finances this Christmas time, unless you have put away money each month principally for Christmas presents.

Nonetheless don’t let this credit crunch destroy your Christmas or New Year, because remember that a budget can go a long way to make the New Year successful for you, and the key one is holding out for the January sales.

With mainly all the high street stores dropping prices aswell as Internet prices droppingdecreasing| it’s a great enticement to either bulk buy or pick up a few things that you might need, that will come in helpful in your everyday life.

A good idea that you can use is to buy a cheaper present at Christmas time for family members and those close to you then save the pricey presents until the January sales. For example, a bottle of vodka and some Belgian chocolates will go down great for a Christmas idea then you can get a nice unexpected gift in the January sales, such as an experience day at a spa, a pampering session or a driving experience day. This will be a superb idea to start someone’s New Year off with style.

Festive Stocking Fillers For Fellas

Festive Stocking Fillers For Fellas by John Smith

As Christmas edges slowly towards us, and the sound of those Jingle Bells ringing grows increasingly louder; a divide across the nation begins to widen. On one side, those overly organised people who have already bought all their Christmas gifts, and on the other, a panic-stricken crowd who perhaps got a little bit distracted by the Santa’s Grotto, and are desperately wondering what gifts they could buy for their loved ones this year.

If we go by the stereotypes then buying gifts for men should be quite simple: socks, whiskey, a sporting biography and a DVD. But no one likes to be predictable and whilst these Christmas gifts are all nice and easy to wrap up, what are you supposed to do for stocking fillers?

Buying stocking fillers should be easy when the shops are filled with so many wonderful gifts, some more useful than others. But for anyone who has ever stood still in the middle of a busy high street in mid-December and drawn a blank as to where to go next, then here is a little guide to help you on your way

Stocking Fillers for the Sophisticated Man

The sophisticated man is a true gent who knows how to appreciate the finer things in life. The choice of stocking fillers can be difficult but it’s always best to indulge them in their little pleasures. If the man in your life likes to cook then you could always treat him to a ‘Grow it’ gift box. Let him grow his own chilli plants or herbs and these pocket-sized gifts are ideal as stocking fillers. He’s most likely to be an organised sort of chap who likes to keep his things in order. If this sounds familiar, then why not treat him to a ‘Vehicle Document file Folder’ or perhaps go for something a little more personal such as an ‘Engraved City Desk Set’?

Stocking Fillers for the Connoisseur

Christmas morning is the only day of the year when it’s considered okay to have a drop of alcohol with breakfast (a small drop of Bucks Fizz or Champagne perhaps). For the wine-buff in the family then an engraved ‘5 Piece Wine Bar Set’ can make a truly personal gift these superior stocking fillers will out-last any hangover. If he knows his Pinot’s from his Chardonnay’s then you could always pop a ‘Wine Tasting Tour’ voucher inside his stocking remarkable Christmas gifts that you can enjoy as well.

Stocking Fillers for the Sporting Pundit

So you already have the sporting biography wrapped and under the Christmas tree with the other gifts, why not go for a hat trick and throw in a couple of sporting stocking fillers too? From mugs and cufflinks, to journals and posters, there are a number of gifts, trinkets and keepsakes to honour his favourite sport. But for something a little more special, then opt for those stocking fillers that he’ll never want to throw away. Choose from a variety of personalised calendars that will display your loved one’s name on all twelve sporting-themed images. These unique gifts will make him the envy of all his friends.

Stocking Fillers for the Real Romantic

Christmas can be a very romantic time of year and if you’re lucky enough to have a ‘real romantic’ in your life, this is the time to make him feel special with some ‘luvvy duvvy’ gifts. For those smaller stocking fillers, a ‘Lover Duck’ or even fridge magnet gifts can easily spell out what you want to say. For a real romantic treat then you could present your man with a special record that honours the song of your choice the first dance from your wedding perhaps or his favourite tune, even the song that was at number one when he was born. He’s bound to be bowled over when you present him with this mounted vinyl and plaque.

Stocking Fillers for The Big Kid

Perhaps the most familiar character of them all, the big kid is certainly catered for when it comes to Christmas gifts and stocking fillers. Whether they be gadgets or toys, the Big Kid is a man who likes to play and is the sort of chap who is usually found ’showing’ the kids how to play with their gifts on Christmas morning. For handy stocking fillers, how about a ‘Cork Screw Key Ring’ or a ‘Rubber Band Ball’? For the man who likes to play, then indulge him with his favourite toys this year or go for a twist on the traditional ones such as a ‘Devil Duck’ rubber duck that will glow red with fury when he puts it in water a little bit of fun at bath time!

With so many ideas for gifts and stocking fillers, this year is sure to be a very merry Christmas indeed.

10 Ways To Make Everyday Shopping More Enjoyable

10 Ways to Make Everyday Shopping More Enjoyable by Angelique

Make shopping for everyday items less stressful. By fine tuning your approach you not only make shopping more enjoyable but you also can learn to make the most out of your time and money.

1. Compare prices before you go shopping. Whether you compare prices online or by newspaper ads you need to make sure you’re getting the best price out there. Different stores have different sales going on at different times, so to maximize your spending money you need to take advantage of sales prices when they are going on.

2. Browse the adds at your shopping destination before you go. This not only lets you know what’s on sale including any items you might need, but is also a great way to shop in advance. Instead of being forced to buy everyday items at full price, you can buy items you need when they are on sale, ensuring these items are on hand for the future and therefore saving money in the long run.

3. Set aside one day a week as errand day. Get all your running around done in one day instead of back and forth all week and you’ll be amazed at the amount of time, money, gas and sanity this can save you.

4. Go shopping in the morning. If your schedule allows, do the entire errand shopping early to avoid unnecessary crowds, thus freeing up the rest of your day.

5. Go shopping later in the evening. Again, if your schedule allows, you can avoid noisy after work crowds and make shopping less frustrating.

6. Create a list. Know what you are shopping for and buy only those items. This one step will save you a great deal of money buy avoiding the urge to “impulse buy.” Plus this makes the shopping trip much quicker buy getting what you need and then getting out just as quickly.

7. Do all your shopping in one location. Sometimes just shopping at one store will save you time and money. With all the big super centers going up today it’s now easier than ever to do one stop shopping. Of course don’t forget to compare prices and buy items on sale, but the hassles of going to multiple stores will be eliminated and most super centers can buy in large bulk, thus passing the savings onto you.

8. Make it a family outing. Instead of putting the full burden on yourself, get the family involved. Set aside that one night a week to get all the shopping done while at the same time spending time together. It beats going shopping alone and extra hands are always nice to have around.

9. Bring a friend. Friends can help you stay on task and not overspend. Plus it’s always more fun to shop with someone else.

10. Shop Online. In my opinion this is the best option. Nowadays you can do your grocery shopping and household shopping all online. It not only saves lots of time, expensive gas and money, but best of all you never have the leave the comfort of home. Or if you don’t get delivery in your area, shop online and have the items waiting for you at the store. Online shopping also creates a more hassle free experience and you won’t be so tired when done. Plus you have a better chance to resist impulses by not wandering around the store and giving into that urge to spend.

By adding these simple steps to your shopping routine you will become a more effective shopper and have a more enjoyable experience. Best of all these simple changes help you save money and allow you to have more time for other fun activities.

A Charlie Brown Christmas (DVD) Review

A Charlie Brown Christmas (DVD) ReviewBy Britt Gillette

Charles Schultz cast the gold standard of annual holiday classics with his 1965 creation of A Charlie Brown Christmas. This animated, made-for-TV special features all the familiar Peanuts characters, although I’ve always wondered why the comic strip was titled Peanuts and not Charlie Brown. Lucy, Snoopy, Schroeder, Linus, Sally, Pig-pen, and Woodstock all make appearances. However, the enduring popularity of this holiday classic stems not from its original storyline, but rather its vivid invocation of childhood nostalgia and memorable Christmas music. It seems everyone on earth has heard the song the characters sing in the closing credits, and it’s become a Christmas classic in-and-of itself.

For those who need refreshing, because I don’t know anyone who hasn’t seen it, A Charlie Brown Christmas covers title character Charlie Brown’s search for the true meaning of Christmas. When neighborhood friend Lucy dispenses her usual five-cent advice, she encourages Charlie Brown to take on the job of director in the school Christmas play. But none of the other kids take their new director seriously, and when Charlie Brown passes over several Christmas trees which he believes embody the commercial exploitation of Christmas, and brings back a sagging relic of branch instead, the other kids fire him as director. Meanwhile, Snoopy is involved in decorating his doghouse with colorful flashing lights and other knick-knacks in an effort to win first-prize in a Christmas decorating contest. In the end, the other kids feel they’ve been too hard on Charlie Brown, and fix up his tree into a brilliant display of Christmas beauty. Linus reveals the true meaning of Christmas by retelling a segment from the Gospels that recounts the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. Nevertheless, Charlie Brown is disillusioned when his idealistic attempt to decorate his humble Christmas tree ends in absolute failure. As a result, only a Christmas miracle can save Charlie Brown from the depths of holiday disaster…

One of the better parts of this television special is when Charlie Brown goes hunting for a Christmas tree. Some of the trees are aluminum, which you rarely see today, especially those trees with the rotating colored lights underneath. Simply put, A Charlie Brown Christmas is a breath of fresh air – a thoughtful, funny, and highly entertaining show which the entire family can enjoy. It connects parents and children through the shared experience of its annual holiday viewing, and parents don’t have to worry about the foul language and adult content that so often permeates today’s television programs. Overall, A Charlie Brown Christmas is as close to perfect as a Christmas television special can be.

Childhood Memories Of Christmas In Germany

Childhood Memories Of Christmas In GermanyBy Jane Roseen

My grandparents migrated from Germany long before I was even a twinkle in my father’s eye. My father was two at the time and doesn’t remember much of his life in Germany. My grandmother, though, has always stayed in touch with her brothers and sisters remaining in Germany and often longed for a Christmas spent with her family back home. When I was eight, my father made that wish come true for her.

I can still remember the look on my grandmother’s face that when my father told her that he was taking her and his family to Germany for two weeks at Christmas (my grandfather had passed the year prior). She had never managed to be in Germany at Christmas time since she left, she always spent Christmas with my grandfather, my father, and our family. She started exclaiming all sorts of things in German and hugging my father, sobbing the whole time.

We arrived in Germany on December 23rd. I was exhausted, but I couldn’t sleep as my grandmother kept poking me awake, trying to get me to look at all the decorations in her hometown. I said to her that I thought everything looked rather plain – I was used to the bright lights and almost garish decorations of home. She just laughed, and told me to look closer. When I did, I realized how beautiful everything was, and how very GREEN. There were boughs of fir and pine everywhere. Most were tied on with big red bows, and candles were lit in every window. I was in awe.

We reached her sister’s home; we’d be staying with various relatives throughout the two weeks. It was the last Sunday of Advent, and my great aunt asked me to light the Advent candle for the evening. I was so honored – my parents never let me anywhere NEAR our Advent wreath at home. I remember being very nervous that I would drop the lighting candle and catch the wreath on fire.

Christmas Eve, we went to my grandmother’s childhood church. I remember her weeping throughout the service. I asked my father why my grandmother was so sad. He told me that it was a combination of happy that she was home again, and sad that my grandfather couldn’t be there to spend the time with her. I slid across the pew to give my grandmother a hug.

When we returned home from church, I saw a room open that had previously been shut. I thought it was just a spare bedroom or something, until I saw the glow coming from the Christmas tree. It was glorious. They used real candles on the tree, and the presents were so beautifully wrapped. That’s an image I’ll never forget.

After the presents came a feast. I must confess that many of the foods were so different for me that I didn’t enjoy it as much as I should have. The goose was quite good, and then I loved the marzipan fruits, cookies, and chocolates.

We stayed in Germany through the Feast of the Epiphany, leaving on January 7th. I met so many family members in those weeks, many of which I haven’t spoken to since. My grandmother passed away three months later. My father always said that she was just waiting to be able to spend one more Christmas in Germany. All I know is that Christmas in Germany is one I will never forget.
