Choosing The Best Learning Toys For Christmas 2009

Choosing The Best Learning Toys For Christmas 2009

As Christmas approaches for 2009, as a parent we start to think about the most suitable toys to purchase our children. I am often torn between the presents my kids would love to receive and those I feel I would like to offer. On the one hand there is part of me that knows they would love to a handheld gaming console like the Nintendo DS.

But there is another part of me that recognizes there are only so many hours in a day and do I really want my child to be playing a computer game instead of reading a book or playing creatively in the yard? The answer to that question is ‘No’. Having said that there is also an element of technological familiarity, I want to encourage my child to be firstly familiar with electronic devices but also I want him to be able to regulate his use of things that are highly appealing but best taken in small doses.

I call it the Coco Pops principle. When I was a kid my parents never bought Coco Pops. Ok maybe that’s not true (I’ll put my petulant child back in the box for a bit). Let’s say they bought this type of cereal perhaps once a year. As a kid I craved Coco Pops and I think a large part of that was seeing the box all the time (on TV, advertisements in comics and on store shelves) and not being able to have it. When I left home and could purchase them for myself I went wild, having Coco Pops every day until I made myself sick.

Part of me thinks if I was simply allowed to have Coco Pops on a semi-regular basis then I wouldn’t have formed such an attachment to them. Creating a sense of deprivation set up a situation where I craved them more and had an irrational attachment to them, wanted them all the time. If I had what I craved in measured doses this attachment would not have been created.

So with kid’s electronic toys my preference is for considered and measured interactions. That is giving them access to the best resources I can find in time slots that fit in alongside other parts of their lives. So that is to say they can use educational learning toys because they are fun but also because they will learn skills other than hand-eye coordination and competitiveness and they can use them for half an hour a day, if it fits in with our schedule.

Purchasing electronic toys for kids needn’t be a hard decision, just remember to buy a recharger!

Creative Christmas Activities For Awesome Family Fun

Creative Christmas Activities For Awesome Family Fun
By Mary Jennings

At the center of the Christmas season is spending time with family. Making lasting memories with your family is at the top of every to-do list during the holiday season. There are many festive activities to bring into your family life so Christmas is more memorable and fun for everyone. Traditional activities and out of the box ideas make the holidays super-special.

Christmas Memories and Traditions

Take a few minutes to remember your own childhood and how you spent the Christmas season at home. Do certain memories stand out as special in your mind? These are probably the Christmas traditions your own parents created for the family. Now it’s time to create memorable Christmas traditions in your own home. Make gingerbread houses together. Decorate holiday cookies. Are you short on time but still recall the delicious smell in your mom’s kitchen at Christmas time? Simmer potpourri to create a warm aroma in your home even if you don’t have time to bake very often.

Christmas Fun In The Kitchen

Maybe baking just isn’t your thing. There are still plenty of fun Christmas activities to do in the kitchen. You can make all kinds of gift items in the kitchen without baking. Make chocolate covered pretzel sticks and chocolates. Pair the chocolate treats with homemade hot cocoa mix to give as Christmas gifts.

Christmas Music

Include music in your family holiday traditions. Have fun with your family singing Christmas carols and making your own CD for the holidays. Use the recording of your family singing carols as holiday music every year while you decorate and enjoy Christmas festivities. Get really crafty and dress up the CD cases to look attractive so you can give them as gifts.

Cutting Down The Christmas Tree

A timeless tradition for many families is cutting down the Christmas tree. This activity adds a lot to the Christmas season at home. You can find Christmas tree farms just about everywhere. Ask a local grower’s group for tree farm locations near you. The family shows up at the farm where mom or dad grab a saw to cut down the family Christmas tree. Everyone hunts for the perfect tree so mom or dad can cut it down and bring it home. Some farms are large and some are small. You may only need to walk a short distance to find the perfect tree or you may wind up hiking up and down hills before the right tree turns up.

More Than A Christmas Tree

Add dimension and fun to the Christmas tree cutting activity. Include additional family traditions in the day, such as lunch at a special place every year. You can also get Christmas candy to eat in the car on the way home with your tree. Another tradition can be shopping together for new ornaments after you bring the tree home and put it in a bucket of water.

Community Christmas Fun

Traditions are also created when you participate in annual community events. Does your town decorate a Christmas tree every year? Does your neighborhood have a block where all the homes are decorated with hundreds of holiday lights? Drive or walk to local Christmas festivities and make them part of your family traditions every year. Try to walk if the weather permits so you have more time to observe the detailed holiday decorations together.

Christmas Cocoa

For kids and adults alike, hot cocoa is an essential part of the holiday season. Start a family tradition of making hot cocoa mix at the beginning of the season. The children can each have a small cup of cocoa every night before bed during the month of December. As Christmas Day gets closer, add special goodies to the hot cocoa such as whipped cream and mini-marshmallows. Leave a cup of homemade hot cocoa for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve.

Christmas In Every Room

As your children get older, they enjoy decorating their rooms for Christmas. Add holiday cheer to every room when you encourage your children to decorate their own space. Let them do all the decorating themselves then take photos of them in their finished rooms. Look at the photos every year to see how the Christmas decorations in their rooms have progressed.

One last thing — Imagine the look on your child’s face if they received a personalized Santa Claus letter from the North Pole. You can also include extra goodies with the Santa letter like Reindeer food. It’s a gift that makes a strong and lasting impression.

How to Outsmart the Recession This Christmas!

How to Outsmart the Recession This Christmas!
By Lisa Huckemeyer

Everyday for the past year or more we’ve heard or read bad news. Unfortunately, we’ve all seen this recession hit our own families and/or those that we love. I’ve seen friends lose their jobs, lose their homes and what’s most sad to me is when I’ve seen the effects of the recession steal their spirits. It’s made everyone in this country take a step back and think about what’s really important in life and what we want to teach our kids.

I, myself, like to indulge. I like to do most things in a big way, over the top, the skies the limit, and I still do. However, I’m coming from a new angle these days. I’m doing all the things that I’ve been told: cut coupons, eat out less, brown bag it, turn off the lights, switch out the light bulbs, recycle, carpool, rent movies rather than see them in the theater, check books out of the library rather than buy them, set budgets, make more of our gifts… Yes, I do them all. But I still want to have fun. I still want my children to look at life as being exciting, full of joy, laughter, lots of friends and family, parties and whatever it is that they may want. Let’s face it, spending significantly less money can put a damper on these things, BUT IT DOESN’T HAVE TO.

Here’s my battle - Christmas! Of course I want to give my children lots of the items on their list. What parent doesn’t? I want my kids to reflect on this Christmas as one where they received everything they wanted. Here’s the thing - I want to cut back but I don’t want to feel like I’ve cut back. I really do think it’s possible if I get creative. I’ve given this a lot of thought and here’s my plan.

1. Make up big adventures for my Elfing Around elves. I’ve already got a few tricks up my sleeve, like filling the boys’ bed with wrapped candy, having the elves sitting on cookie sheets while sliding down the steps covered in extra batting, and having the elves bring the boys their Christmas pj’s (which I bought on clearance last year). The elves make Christmas so magical that I really don’t have to do much more. They were the #1 best investments in my journey to make Christmas special without spending a fortune. Honestly, every family should have one or two of these elves!!!

2. Decorate a tree with gift cards, dollar bills and coupons for my teenager. This is going to be a huge hit. I’m wrapping each item in a small box and hanging them from this never before seen tree. It’s going to take him quite awhile to unwrap his $10 itunes cards, movie tickets, dollar bills, etc. Let’s face it - teenagers are hard to buy for. All they want is money or big ticket items. This tree will be unique, appreciated and unexpected. Those are three adjectives I always look for in a gift. There’s nothing worse than spending the day at the mall shopping for the perfect gift and having to exchange it the day after Christmas.

3. I love to make things for my children and this year it will be big faux fur blankets. I’ve seen these blankets sold in boutique stores for $300. Are they crazy? I can make the same exact blanket (I’m not kidding - the same exact blanket) for a fraction of the cost. I’m going to wrap them in a big box, then wrap their favorite DVD to go on top of the big box and then adhere some movie sized boxes of candy on top. I’m going to hot glue popcorn all over the top of the big box just for fun. Very creative if I do say so myself!

4. I’m a member of Snapfish and quite frequently they send me e-coupons to make free photo books. I’ve never done it before, but I’m going to try it! I think they make amazing keepsakes, especially because they’re created with love. Let’s not forget the operative word - FREE!

5. I’m also orchestrating a different type of gift exchange with my extended family. Instead of cutting back on each person’s gift, we’re going to have everyone bring several gifts valued at $10 each. Everyone will spend a total of $30. We’re going to play a fast paced dice game that will end up getting everyone involved, engaged, excited and wishing we could play again. Last year my kids won $10 in ice cream coupons, itunes cards, special lotions, Starbuck’s gift cards, a Rubik’s cube, and movie tickets in a plastic popcorn tub. Everyone spent less money, had more fun and went home with gifts they could really use.

I know my kids are going to love this Christmas more than ever. While it’s much easier to buy their happiness as the generation before us was much more able to do, I think I’m going to get the bigger ooohhhs and aaahhhs than the big ticket items get - and the memories I create will last a lifetime.

Promotional Christmas Gifts - Making the Best of the Christmas …

Promotional Christmas Gifts - Making the Best of the Christmas Season For Your Business
By Anne Cronin

We always know it’s going to arrive, but often Christmas catches us out when it comes to planning ahead. Most of us don’t like to start thinking about Christmas before at least November, but in business it’s never too early…only too late! There are many things to consider when choosing Christmas gifts, and hopefully this guide will help speed up the thought process so you can get ahead of the competition.

Time.

This is one of the most crucial parameters. You actually need to count backwards from when you would ideally want to distribute your chosen promotional Christmas gifts (possibly from the beginning of December) to get the optimum benefit during the pre-season time of partying and goodwill. Then allow plenty of time for production, printing and delivery of your chosen promotional products, add in a bit of contingency in case of unforeseen circumstances. Add on the time you need to research ad consider your options… and you may arrive probably somewhere in October or September. In other words, now is a good time to start!

Budget.

It’s always expedient to make sure you know exactly how much you have to spend, and how many gifts you need to buy. This will give you a figure per head to work with. It’s not worth overspending here, as there are many suitable promotional gifts are available. Gifts don’t need to be expensive to work well for you, but do consider the demographic of your target audience when making your selection. You may want something fun, quirky and associated with the occasion, such as custom-printed Christmas Baubles, Chocolate Santas and Lollies, or Christmas themed USB People. Alternatively, this is a key time of year to give promotional calendars and diaries to your valued customers which will be appreciated all year. Your brief and budget will dictate the kind of Christmas gifts that will work best for your company.

Choose your Supplier.

Make sure you choose the right supplier for your promotional Christmas Gifts. Choose a highly reputable online company which supplies a good range of quality promotional merchandise all year round, not one that just springs up to take advantage of the Christmas season. The quality of your chosen gifts reflects the standards and aspirations of your company, so you need to be reassured that your chosen Christmas items are professionally printed and presented, and that you will get the level service you deserve. The help and knowledge of an industry expert dedicated to your order, and whom you can contact directly, means that you can be sure your printed Christmas gifts are perfect for your requirements.

Order in Good Time

Once you have all these things in place, and you have chosen your corporate Christmas Gifts, do go ahead place your order in plenty of time. This means that you have the best chance of getting the products you prefer, custom-printed to your requirements, and delivered to you in good time for your Christmas promotions.

You can then sit back and relax, knowing that your Christmas marketing and PR campaign is well taken care of (and maybe then is the time to be as organised on the home front!)
