Christmas Shopping on a Budget

Christmas Shopping on a Budget
By I. Jenkinson

Although most people love the spirit of giving at Christmas, it’s also a fact that Christmas shopping can be a substantial financial burden for many. This is particularly true for those who have a large family or a big group of friends who normally exchange Christmas presents. Christmas shopping can also be a financial problem for those who feel obligated to buy expensive gifts for each person on their list. Still, there are ways to address the financial burden which often results from Christmas shopping. One of the ways to deal with this financial problem is to fix a budget in advance. A different way to deal with the financial strain of Christmas shopping is to shop throughout the twelve months instead of all at once. This article will talk about the importance of fixing a budget for Christmas shopping as well as how Christmas shopping can become less financially taxing by spreading the Christmas shopping throughout the twelve months.

Those who have fears over the sum of money they’ll be spending on their Christmas shopping should look at setting a budget for their Christmas shopping before they commence their shopping. . In order to commence the process of fixing a budget for Christmas shopping, it’s important to begin by creating a list of all the people you mean to buy Christmas gifts. This list should include all of the close acquaintances and family members you generally purchase gifts for also any colleagues or employees you generally buy gifts for, your mailman or your children’s teachers. You may also want to budget for presents donated to toy drives coordinated by charitable organizations if you generally contribute during these events.

Once you have your list of gift receivers there are a couple of ways to go about setting up a budget. Maybe the simplest way is to choose how much you plan to spend on Christmas shopping and divide this by the number of gift receivers on your list. This will result in a budget in which you plan to spend the same amount of money on Christmas gifts for each person on your Christmas list. This type of budget strategy may be suitable if you plan on buying similar gifts for everybody on your Christmas list but it may not work out easily if you prefer to buy something really special for a few of your nearest friends or relations.

A different strategy for establishing a Christmas shopping budget is to ascertain how much money you would like to spend and so divide the persons into different categories. Some of the categories you might wish to include are close acquaintances and relations, business companions, acquaintances and gifts which are bought for people you don’t know. Once you have all of the members of your list categorized you are able to determine the percentage of your total budget you would like to spend on each category. For instance you could choose to spend 50% of your total budget on close friends and relations, 25% of your total budget on business acquaintances, 15% of your total budget on acquaintances and the remaining 10% on Christmas presents for charity drives. Then you’ll be able to use these numbers to determine the total sum of money you’ll spend on each category and divide that number by the amount of people in each category to work out a dollar amount for each person on your Christmas list.

A concluding strategy for establishing a budget for your Christmas shopping is to begin by ascertaining how much you plan to spend on some of the most important people on your gift receiver list. This will most probably include your closest relations. Once you set amounts of money for your closest relations, it is time to divide up the remaining sum of money in your Christmas shopping budget. This can either be done at random by dividing the left over amount in your budget by the number of people left on your list or you can continue through your list selecting a dollar amount for for each one until you reach your budget. At this time if there are still people left over on your list you’ll have to either reassess the dollar amounts you’ve already chosen or consider doing away with some people from your list.

Christmas Snow And Easter Skiing

Christmas Snow And Easter SkiingBy Dave Mayweather

Indeed the seasons are changing, no one can argue that the snow is coming later, but few will realise that it is also staying for much longer. We are seeing some of the best snow arriving mid to late march, and lasting well into April and May. Maybe skiers need to start changing their habits for their annual ski holidays?

From my own observations over the 20 years that I have been immersed in the industry, the snow has not degraded over the past two decades; it has simply chosen to start coming later on. But not so late that it has wiped out the traditional and favoured time of year to go skiing, which is of course Christmas.

Ten years ago the temperatures would drop in late October and the first snow would arrive in late November. A base layer would have formed by the first week in December, allowing skiers to enjoy cold, dry snow from early December on.

In those days Easter skiing was a luxury only afforded by those who could justify the expense of an elite “high altitude” destination such as Tignes and Val d’isere. Snow around the rest of Europe did not last much beyond the end of March.

Easter is a different kettle of fish nowadays. The temperatures are remaining cold and the snow is falling heavier than ever during the first two weeks of April. Last year I enjoyed one of the best ski holidays I have had in 23 years up in Les Arcs 2000 over the 25th of April.

Early season however was not so great. In the past few years, the ground has not been reaching it’s critical level of freezing until early December, which wipes out the relevance of any late November snow flurries that excite the press in the UK and encourage early season skiers to hit the mountains with such aplomb.

Above 1500m we are seeing bases form by mid December, which means that unlike times past, the Christmas week is now the first really decent week of the season for ski holidays.

But let’s not forget times past. A look at the history books will tell you that we have seen all this before. I have spoken with countless locals during my time in France who have lived for much of the last century in these alpine farming villages; villages that have now become major ski resorts.

These locals are not worried at all. They have seen it all before: “Snow comes and goes in cycles”, they say. “You get the good years and the bad years”.

In 1988 the consistency of snow was so flaky (excuse the pun) that only one run on the famous Arare in Avoriaz was open all season. Meribel was not skiing at all below 2000 metres, and Courchevel was in a similar pickle. This of course was before the age of snow cannons, and skiers were had to take off their skis and walk the rest of the grassy slope down from1850 metres.

But the resort locals are not ignorant of the effects of the British press sounding off about changing seasons. Nor their dependency on the great British skiing public for their livelihood. They also realise that British skiers are traditionalists and Christmas week is our favourite time of year to ski.

They are fighting back with snow cannons, learning new ways of producing fake snow, even experimenting with bacteria that will crystalise in plus degrees Celsius.

Their techniques of “pisting” the mountain are evolving to cope with the demand in Christmas ski holidays. Piste bashers (tractors that shovel snow) are working all night to store snow at altitude where it will last the season before being used on the lower slopes.

They are keeping their pistes in better condition and spending their summers preparing the ground to hold the base layer more effectively in those early winter weeks. In sub 1500 metre resorts, slope preparation is becoming an art in order to retain their piece of the demand for those Christmas ski holidays?

The Christmas Angels And The Sheppard’s

The Christmas Angels And The Sheppard’sBy Joe Will

A Story of Angels Visiting the Sheppard’s.

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem an angel of Christmas appeared to the shepherds telling them of the Christ Childs birth. This is a fictional story of two of the trumpeting angels that had always been best of friends. The two angels were easily recognized. One of the angels wore a robe of sunset pink and the other angel dressed in a sky blue robe. The two angel friends were renowned for their sweet duets they played on their pure silver trumpets for the glorification of the Lord. All the other angels would gather around to listen as the duet played their harmonious tunes. Honored for their musical ability, the trumpeting angels of Christmas were often asked to lead the orchestra with the first few notes of a song.

One day the orchestra members were called together for an exciting announcement. At the beginning of one of the practice session, the orchestra leader Temira said, “Lift up your instruments, and lift up our hearts.” The Lord was preparing to send his Son to live among and teach the Lords messages to the people on earth. A jubilee of music was planned for this monumental event. Every sweet, angelic voice would sing, every musical instrument would play. “Who can explain the importance of our newest assignment?” asked Temira. The trumpeting angel in pink stood and spoke. “The Lord has commanded that we appear on a cold winter night to the shepherds in the hills of Bethlehem. These shepherds might fear the us. They have never even seen one of us before, much less a sky filled with heavenly angels.” Then the angel in blue continued, “We will fill the shepherd’s hearts with the joy of our music. Their fear will be replaced with love, and then we will tell the shepherds about the Savior and his birth in a stable located in Bethlehem.” “Wonderful!” said Temira with a smile. Honored to be part of the jubilee, all of the orchestra members planned to practice their parts to perfection. They hurried away, discussing the duet that would start the concert.

Finally, the evening came when the Lord’s Son was born in a tiny stable in the city of Bethlehem. According to the plan, the heavenly angels of Christmas would appear first to the shepherds in the hills outside the little village of Bethlehem. The entire host of musical angels stationed themselves on that cold winter night in the dark sky. On cue, the trumpeting angels lifted their instruments and played the first few notes of the world’s most glorious concert. As their music filled the sky, the shepherds looked up in amazement. Their hearts were filled with the awesome glory of God. The angels told the shepherds of the good tidings of great joy, the angels were joined by a host of angels singing “Glory to god in the highest, and on earth peace, good will to men” and they praised God. After the angels had departed the Sheppard’s in their amassment were thrilled and humbled at what they had just witnessed. The Sheppard’s decided to follow the angel’s directions and they took part in the greatest adventure of all time.

How To Survive The Works Christmas Party

How To Survive The Works Christmas Party by administrator

by blueboy

Are you going to your works Christmas Party this year? Are you worried that you might do something which you may later regret when under the influence of alcohol? I am attending my own companies Christmas party next week and after having been to a number of these events in the past, I have a number of ideas of what to do and what not to do, ideas of which I will be writing about in this article.

I have witnessed some crazy things at previous Christmas parties that I have attended, from people getting drunk and hitting the boss, to other people attempting to chat up the boss. These may seem quite funny when looking back but at the time they were far from this. The weeks and months after these parties were less than comfortable for the people involved. The excuse of being drunk was not enough and the careers of the people at the companies involved were basically over from that point.

The Christmas party is a no win situation for the employees. If you keep too quiet you can be seen as boring and as not being a team player. If you drink too much you can be seen as an alcoholic and like some sort of rogue.

I have learned that to have a few drinks is fine but that it is important to take it easy on the alcohol, so as to not become too drunk. I would aim to drink about half the amount that I would on a normal night out.

The later the night gets the more likely it becomes of people doing something silly. My next idea is to leave the party as early as possible but without telling anybody. When people ask where and why you went, I would say that there was a crisis at home. People probably will not even remember that you left early as they are more likely to be talking about the people who did make fools out of themselves.

My next tip is to think twice before saying anything to your boss. Before speaking ask yourself a question, will what I am about to say get me into any kind of strife?

If you follow these snippets of advice I am sure you will enjoy your Christmas party and will not have any reason to have regrets.
